Summary of Recent Product Recalls


HP (Hewlett-Packard) has expanded the scope of recalling laptop batteries due to fire hazard; American Regent has recalled the Sterile Water for Injection, USP, 50 mL Single Dose Vial Due to Particulate Matter. Here is a summary of recent product recalls.

1. HP has expanded the range of laptop battery recalls, due to possible fire and again urging consumers to check the notebook models and batteries. Those being recalled lithium-ion batteries may overheat and rupture, triggering a fire or burns to consumers.
  
2. Lan Enterprises Recalls Zooper Strollers Due to Strangulation Hazard.

Hazard: The opening between the armrest bar/snack tray and seat bottom of the stroller can allow an infant's body to pass through and become entrapped at the neck, posing a strangulation hazard to young children when a child is not harnessed. When using a stroller, parents are encouraged to always secure children by using the safety harness, and never leave the child unattended.

3. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warned that all terrain vehicle (AVT) drivers to ensure safety during the Memorial Day holiday.

CPSC found that in 2010 during the 4-day Memorial Day holiday, there were 28 fatal accidents. This is equivalent to a daily average of 7 people died. Five of the deceased was under 16 years old.

4. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warns about the distributed smoke fog alarms in, the Atlanta.

CPSC urges consumers to check whether the smoke alarms are imitation products at home in Atlanta. From 2006 to May, 2011, the Atlanta area has freely distributed about 18,500 false smoke alarms. The smoke alarms may not be useful in case of a real fire.

5. Lawson Aquatics is recalling pool drain covers sold nationwide. The recalled drain covers were incorrectly rated to handle the flow of water through the cover, which could pose a possible entrapment hazard.

The recall involves various pool and spa drain covers that can be identified by Lawson's name and model information on the cover.

6. Paramount Pool & Spa Systems is recalling MDX pool and spa drain covers sold nationwide. The recalled drain covers were incorrectly rated to handle the flow of water through the cover, which could pose a possible entrapment hazard.

7. Waterway Plastics is recalling pool drain covers sold nationwide. The recalled drain covers were incorrectly rated to handle the flow of water through the cover, which could pose a possible entrapment hazard.

8. Eight manufacturers are recalling pool and spa drain covers sold nationwide.
The recalled drain covers were incorrectly rated to handle the flow of water through the cover, which could pose a possible entrapment hazard.

9. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the U.S. Olympic swimming athlete held a security media campaign to announce the state of drowning and near drowning new events.

As the Memorial Day holiday weekend approaching, the media has reported the 55 drowning incidents and 63 close to drowning incidents of its 29 states for the first five months of 2011.  CPSC opened Pool Safely: Simple Steps Save Lives for the summer swimming season, which is the second held similar event. Swimming pool safety activities is a national public education aiming at reducing children drowning and non-fatal submerged and trapped events in the pool and spa.


10. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) suggests carefully examining and lighting the grills when going summer outing.

As millions of Americans will go have a picnic outing to celebrate summer this weekend, CPSC urges consumers to check the grill, and safely lit, to prevent fire and carbon monoxide poisoning.


11. Wal-Mart recalls General Electric food processors because they pose a laceration and fire hazard.

The safety interlock system on the processors is prone to failure. This can lead to the food processor running without the lid securely in place, which poses a laceration hazard. Additionally, the units can smoke and catch fire.


12. STIHL recalls Yard Power Products due to burn and fire hazards.

Hazard: The level of ethanol and other fuel additives can distort the toolless fuel cap, allowing fuel to spill, posing a fire and burn hazard.


13. Dream on Me recalls the drop-side rail hardware due to possible entrapped in the space, leading to strangulation and/or suffocation of the baby.

WHY: For the full-size cribs, the drop-side rail hardware can break or fail, allowing the drop side to detach from the crib. When that happens, it could create a space between the drop side and the crib mattress where a young child’s body can become entrapped in the space, leading to strangulation and/or suffocation.

For the portable cribs, the drop-side rail hardware can break or fail, allowing the drop side to detach from the crib. In addition, the portable crib mattress support hardware and the drop-side release latch can break easily, and the slats can loosen or break and detach from the crib. Children can also cut themselves on exposed hardware inside the cribs.


14. Primal Pet Foods Recall on Feline Chicken and Salmon cat foods with a "Best Buy" date code of 043112-17 due to possible Salmonella contamination. This is the raw frozen diet of nuggets.

Both people and pets can contract Salmonella. Common signs are diarrhea, vomiting and fever. Some pets may show no signs of illness themselves but act as carriers of Salmonella.

15. Transpecos Foods, LP of Pecos, Texas is recalling the following items because they may contain undeclared Milk and/or Egg allergens.

16. BCS Int’l Corp. of Long Island City, NY is voluntarily recalling DR. SNACK brand CHOCO RAISIN, 12 OZ. containers with “Sell By 03/05/2012” date code only because they may contain undeclared peanuts. People who have an allergy to peanuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product.

17. Globe All Wellness, LLC Issues a Voluntary Recall of Dietary Supplement Found to Contain an Undeclared Drug Ingredient.

Globe All Wellness, LLC has been informed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that one of the company's weight loss dietary supplements that was sold by a seller that was not authorized by Globe All Wellness, LLC to sell the product contains an undeclared drug ingredient. FDA lab analyses of this dietary supplement was found to contain undeclared Sibutramine. The FDA has not approved Sibutramine; therefore, the safety and effectiveness of this product is unknown.



18. Narala Bakery Inc. recalled its Halal Plain Cake and Halal Fruit Cake because they contain eggs that weren't listed on the labels. The cakes were sold throughout New York City. The FDA said no one has reported getting sick from eating the cakes. Consumers should throw the cakes out and call the bakery at (718) 287-8494.

19. Philips recently recalled specific lots of infant and neonatal-sized Philips FilterLine H Set and VitaLine H Set Microstream carbon dioxide (CO2) sampling lines shipped from November 2010 through March 2011.

These devices are used by emergency medical services, hospitals, and other health care providers to measure exhaled CO2 during ventilation of infants and neonates.  According to Oridion, the manufacturer of the devices, dislodged plastic strands may be found within the airway adapter which may then become inhaled by the patient. The strands are typically 5 mm long and 100 microns in diameter, about the thickness of a human hair.


20. “Nazareth Classic” and “Nazareth Light” cheese has been recalled by Atalanta Corporation, an Elizabeth, New Jersey based food distributor, because the product has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

21. Pentrexyl Forte Natural: Recall - Misleading Packaging

ISSUE: Phoenix Import & Distribution LLC and FDA notified the public of a recall for Pentrexyl Forte Natural because the packaging is believed to be misleading, causing it to be confused with an antibiotic. Pentrexyl Forte Natural is a Dietary Supplement only and does not contain antibiotics. Use of the product by ill individuals could delay treatment for serious illnesses.
